Artist Statement:

Through my work, I explore the myriad relationships between the natural world and our place within it. More specifically, I investigate deeper the social structures that communicate what is culturally considered home and to whom it is entitled.

I am interested in the function of absence and how it impacts the physical and emotional presence of an environment. Consider how many times have we felt the lack of something more heavily than its opposite presence? Moreover, as boundaries define absence to presence, shape is derived; what, then, are our responses to it?

I am further interested in the value of truth to falsity: what makes a memory valid? At what point does the absence of information create new stories? How frequent does a lie need to be told to be believed? How do our lives compound over generations and the trauma our foreparents experienced, and how does that information relate to the present moment? And for documented history, from whose perspective are we assigning something value? How can we determine the myth from perspective, and how much does it even matter?

Most often, my work is made on and with paper, but I will work with any media that fits to the ideas I seek to explore. I prefer to work in a restricted palette or material in response to the American maxim of blind consumerism. And while simplicity is a common aim in material or palette, my work tends to be obsessive and ritualized.
