How to Start a Sourdough Starter

One of the things I picked up from King Arthur Flours was a batch of their fresh sourdough starter, so last night I started starting it, and Justin & I videotaped it in 3 parts for your curious viewing pleasure.

Sourdough breads are made with a starter, meaning a little batch of “dough” that has been allowed to ferment for a period of time. These starters can travel generations, through hundreds of thousands of hands, meaning that when it arrives in my kitchen it already has its own history.

Starter is a living being. It consists of flour and water and wild yeast. It must be fed, like any living creature, only its diet is flour and water.

Pretty soon I’ll make a loaf of sourdough with it… which will hopefully be veddy nahce, veddy naaahhhce.
