“Egg” Seasoning the Veganing

Just about the only thing I think we really miss having is egg. As luck would have it, there is this amazing spice called Kala Namak and it tastes just like hardboiled egg yolk. Kala Namak is also called Black Salt, Indian Black Salt, or Himalayan Black Salt. You should be able to find this in any Indian foods store. We actually bought ours off Amazon because it was much cheaper for a large bag of it. Now for the recipe, this is the egg seasoning that I use on our tofu for our breakfast burritos:

“Egg” Seasoning

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 1T Kala Namak
  • 1T Onion Powder
  • 1t Paprika
  • 1t Turmeric

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients to a small mason jar, attach to blender, and blend until fine. About 30 seconds.
  2. Store in jar.

When making our tofu scramble I’ll use 1/3 package of extra firm tofu and about 2 teaspoons of the seasoning. Combine the tofu and seasoning and scramble it up in your frying pan.

It looks great, delicious even, but I can’t eat tofu, or anything with saponins in it, for that matter. I’m interested in vegan recipes but I feel limited. I probably have ten packages of nuts and seeds in my pantry.
    Looking forward to more recipes!

    1. You can use this seasoning with anything that you want an egg flavor on. We use this with mashed chickpeas to make “egg” salad.

You could also season bland mushrooms, or lentils, or anything really. It just gives an egg flavor where egg flavor is wanted. I even use it to make my vegan mayo taste like traditional mayo.
