10 day update, Grocery Project

So far, our tally shows a $4.71 per person per day cash money spent since Sept 1 on groceries. Certainly, someone must be thinking, “my god, what kind of garbage must they be eating for so little money?” So I put together the menus for the last ten days. All items are homemade (from scratch) or close-to-single-item in the container (example: cream, butter, brown sugar, oats) or noted by proper noun capitalization. Further, items marked with ♦ are not part of the $4.71 total.

Not everything is “certified organic,” but much of it is. We grow our food organically, so our tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, chard (green of green smothies) is all organic, plus many of our herbs. I can’t seem to grow cilantro, so we buy that and we try to get it organic if we can, but we can’t always. We buy our coffee from a local roaster who purchases fair trade / organic beans. Sure, we could get coffee at $9/lb, but we could also get stomachaches and shitty karma. We do what we can, where we can, when we can. And that is all anyone can ask of us.
